“Bletchley Park: Enigma, Ultra, and the Making of Colossus”
The Development of the First Digital Computing Systems
Summary: In the late 1930s, a small team of “codebreakers” focused on the German Enigma Code being used for diplomatic and military purposes. They occupied a Victorian family estate in Bletchley Park, outside London and that fledgling organization had an enormous impact on the outcome of World War II. This presentation will outline the breaking of the German Enigma code producing top-secret “Ultra” information about German military plans, locations of ships, submarines and battle groups, and how the first mechanized codebreaking machines now called “Turing machines” were devised. Further, as the volume of data became simply overwhelming, an engineer working for the British Post Office designed and built the first calculating and counting machine dubbed “Colossus”, now credited in the computing world as the first digital computing machine.
